What happens when two of the greatest sprinters in history sit down for an honest, unfiltered conversation? You get the most significant episode in Ready Set Go history.
On Thursday, February 27th, Usain Bolt joined Justin Gatlin and Rodney Green for an episode that has already made waves. From his legendary career to his biggest races, toughest rivals, and even a few untold stories, Bolt delivered. And let's say–he didn't hold back.
It's hard to imagine the fastest man in history ever struggling, but as Bolt told it, his journey wasn't all smooth sailing. He opened up about his early struggles transitioning from junior to senior competition, the setbacks that nearly derailed his rise, and how his coach, Glen Mills, mapped out a three-year plan that led to his 2008 Olympic explosion. And in case you were wondering, the 200 meters was always his favourite event. His 200m world record in 2008? More meaningful than the 100m record, Bolt said.
Of course, you can't talk about Bolt's career without mentioning his biggest rival–Justin Gatlin. For years, these two dominated the track, facing off in some of the most electrifying races in history. But beyond the competition was a deep mutual respect. Bolt admitted Gatlin's consistency forced him to stay at his best, while Gatlin revealed that Bolt's dominance brought him back to the sport after a hiatus. They reflected on their most iconic races, pre-race mind games, and even a few moments of shade on and off the track.
Bolt's 9.58-second 100m in Berlin. His 19.19-second 200m. The world still hasn't seen anyone come close. In this episode, Bolt took us inside those legendary moments, what went through his mind, the pressure he felt, and even the races where he thinks he "messed up." He also cleared the air on some of the sport's most talked-about controversies, including the infamous "spit in my lane" incident and what really happened, his one false start and how it still stings to this day, and the 2017 World Championships where he admitted, "I wasn't supposed to be there."
Track and field today looks a lot different from when Bolt was dominating. While he was happy to see the next generation take over, he had some words for young sprinters calling out legends—specifically Noah Lyles. Bolt's take? "You know my name, stop it."
From start to finish, this conversation had everything fans could ask for. It was honest, hilarious, insightful, and packed with never-before-heard stories. And with record-breaking views and engagement, it is officially in the Tidal League Hall of Fame.
