If you're looking for a heartwarming and, at times, hilariously awkward show, "Nobody Wants This" on Netflix might be your next binge. Adam Brody stars as a progressive rabbi trying to navigate love, faith, and modern relationships, all while falling for Joanne, an agnostic woman played by the always-charming Kristen Bell - star of one of the most underrated shows of the early aughts, "Veronica Mars." (fun fact: 18-year-old me has loved Adam Brody since he first appeared as Dave on "Gilmore Girls," and here we are 20+ years later, and my obsession continues in this new, sexier, grown-up version of Rabbi Noah)
Fans are raving about the show's unique take on love across different belief systems, bringing a fresh perspective to the classic romantic comedy. But it isn't just the comedy attracting people to the show, but also an example of a healthy relationship that often gets ignored for the sake of storyline and laughs. People love how it dives into the complexities of balancing personal convictions with the messiness of love without getting caught in the tropes that we normally see in shows like this: lack of communication, leaning into miscommunications, and holding unrealistic expectations of your partner.
Adam Brody's character is warm, witty, and delightfully progressive, making for some hilarious yet insightful moments as he tries to reconcile his role as a rabbi with his feelings for someone who doesn't quite share his faith.
Kristen Bell's Joanne is equally compelling—sharp, independent, and unafraid to question everything. The chemistry between Brody and Bell is undeniable, and viewers can't get enough of their playful, sometimes tense, back-and-forth. This show has proven to be a smart, funny, and genuinely sweet look at how two people from different worlds can connect, surprisingly, with honesty and healthy boundaries - and maybe even more surprisingly, in the entertainment world, those things do not make the show any less sexy, hilarious or compelling, they do the opposite.
The show doesn't just deliver laughs; it also gives viewers a lot to think about, with moments that touch on modern spirituality, love, and open-mindedness. So, if you're in the mood for a rom-com that's as thought-provoking as it is entertaining, "Nobody Wants This" should be on your radar.
The only thing I ask for Season 2 is please give me more Sasha (Timothy Simons, who stole every scene he played in here and in the HBO hit "Veep")
