A Draft that will change the WNBA forever (1 minute read)

Last week, we saw history made, and some of our favourite college players took the next step in their careers.

The 2024 WNBA draft has broken records as the most-watched WNBA draft of all time. 2.4 million people tuned in to watch these young ladies get selected for the W.

Let's GO, GIRLS!

Going into the draft, we knew that a few picks were locked in, but we did see a few surprises throughout the night.

The Number one overall pick came as no surprise, as Caitlin Clarke was selected by the Indiana Fever. With her shooting range and passion for the game, she is going to bring this team to another level. She is starting her career by securing a record-breaking deal with Nike: 8 years, $28 million dollars. Girl, get that bag.

Cameron Brink is bringing her impressive rebounding, powerhouse blocking, and developing 3-point shooting skills to the Los Angeles Sparks. She will be a game changer for this team, with her ability to play multiple positions they have made an excellent selection. They may even have a franchise-changing player on their hands.

There was no doubt Kamilla Cardoso would be a top pick in this year's WNBA draft. With the Chicago Sky having the third pick, they secured themselves a truly impressive player. With the need for a better defensive team, at 6-foot-7, Cardoso is not only going to bring them the defensive skills they are looking for, but she is also going to be able to make an impact on the offence.

We did see a few surprises during draft night. Can we talk about the unexpected selection of Iowa's Kate Martin by the Las Vegas Aces? She must be happy to be heading to the reigning WNBA champs. What about Angel getting selected 7th by the Chicago Sky? They projected to go 10th; her getting that selection was well deserved. I think the biggest surprise of the night would have been the selection of Nika Muhl; she was projected to go in the top 10 but wasn't selected until the second round. 14th overall, she will be heading to the Seattle Storm, which I think will be the perfect fit for her.

So many great players were selected in this year's WNBA Draft, and they all deserve their flowers and appreciation as they all play a role in changing the view of women's basketball. We are already seeing so many teams selling out of their season tickets. There is a lot of hype around the upcoming season, as a whole new set of fans will follow along. I am looking forward to the first game of the season, Indiana Fever Vs. Dallas Wings on May 3rd.

Let's get this exciting season started!
